Business Week ran a special on optimism in this economy that includes several very interesting articles. They might shed some light on where we go from here and how to be prepared for the best. Worth a read.
Fox News has an article detailing how social security payments will shrink in real terms for the first time since 1975. The trustees have opted to forgo the cost of living adjustments for the next two years. This is in response the negative CPI (consumer price index) that has resulted from this severe down turn.

8/10/2009:
The Wall Street Journal ran an article about Treasury Secretary Geithner asking Congress to raise U.S. debt limit. This is is exactly what the democrats are hoping for a carte blanche to borrow money. I don't know what is worse that we will likely reach the limit of $12.1 trillion by this fall or that Congress will probably raise it.
At least one democratic Senator is open reason! Fox News is reporting that the number 2 democrat in the Senate is open to health care reform without a public health care option. At least maybe they will pass a bill that isn't a death sentence for the federal budget - even if it isn't perfect.

The House is preparing to vote on the Health Care reform bill now that it has cleared all panels and committees. The Wall Street Journal had a brief article on it this week that is worth a read.
Fox News has an article discussing Obama's change of heart on taxes. I am sure I am not the only one unsurprised that Obama is considering raising taxes across the board. Something he campaigned against doing.

You just have to listen to this. It is audio of an interview with a patients rights advocate about the details in the health care destruction package working it's way through Congress. Listen Up!
The health care brawl is alive and well in Washington. Finally, truth is coming out about the health care reform ambitions of our President. Finally, the public is catching on to the costs, inefficiencies, and pitfalls of government run health care. You can read about it in this Fox News article.
There is also a nice video of Obama....just a mistake or a little ray of truth - you decide.

I don't usually find CNN all that informative, but I guess everybody gets one right now and again. Check out "Reality check: Canada's government health care system." Obama wants to model his system in a similar fashion and we will have to pick up the tab so make sure read anything you can find about this topic.
The Lonely Conservative has a interesting post about Obama and Russia. Check it out...
The climate change bill has been delayed! Check it out our senators have a least half a brain...
Nearing retirement or just concerned about it? Business Week ran an interesting series on it entitled, "Rethinking Retirement." The piece is interesting though I am not sure I buy into all the things suggested.

I mentioned the book Meltdown by Thomas Woods in last week's Monday Must Read. I am going to mention it this week again because it is just that good! The author explains in plain English how we ended up in this mess, how the Fed is responsible, and what should be done. It is a great book for those that want to understand how the Fed messes with our economy and why it is bad, but prefer not to read in depth economic texts.
"The Welch Way," in last week's Business Week really hits on why all the sudden change being pushed by Obama and Congress is too much too fast.

I missed a few weeks, but this week is full of stuff you just have to read!
"If democrats tax health benefits...," this post on The Lonely Conservative discusses how Democrats are considering taxing your employer health care contributions unless you are a member of a union.
"House Passes Climate Bill," from the Wall Street Journal June 27th edition. Yes it is true in the midst of this recession the house passed the largest tax increase in American history. Read up on this! Also, check out this related article from Fox News.
"Americans Increasingly Skeptical of Obama's...," this Fox News article talks about the impacts of Obama's huge deficits on public opinion plus its got this great photo of him!
If you have been wondering how we got into this mess, why our efforts don't seem to be getting us out, and how to prevent such problems in the future then you should definitely read Meltdown by Thomas E. Woods Jr.

"Glimmers of a Housing Recovery," Business Week June 8th edition. This article discusses how the housing sector has been performing in the recent months and why that matters for the recovery. Read up because this one will affect us all.
"The Hard Road Ahead for Government Motors," Business Week June 8th edition. This article discusses the market environment that GM and Chrysler will find themselves in once they emerge from bankruptcy. The short answer is - it's not pretty.

"The Fed Will Be In No Rush To Raise Rates," Business Week June 1st edition. This week's Business Outlook column provides an interesting take on where we are heading. In two of my recent posts, "The Economy and You" and "The Economic Outlook," I have noted that there are very real inflation risks. The article points out how capacity figures into the mix and where the author thinks the Fed is headed.
This week there has been a lot of news about North Korean missle tests and nuclear programs. This is defintely something everyone should watch in the coming weeks and months. The news is all over the place so I don't have a specific article.
"Someone Must Pay for Health Reform," Business Week June 1st edition. This article points out that almost everyone agrees the current system sucks, but no one wants to take any action. The reason is that no one wants to pay for it - there are really only 3 ways to pay for it and they are all unpaletable for one reason or another.
I am currently reading a book that I would reccommend everyone read. It's "Blink" by Malcolm Gladwell. So pick it up at Barnes and Noble, Amazon, or your local library!

"When Even Failure Stops Working," Business Week May 25th, 2009. This article looks at the failures of current bankruptcy law, especially when it comes to dealing with the current economic crisis. The article also points out why this could spell the end of the beginning of the next economic boom.
"Can China Clean Up Its Act?," Business Week May 25th, 2009. This is an excellent article on how China's government is steering the country into advanced eco-friendly technologies and what that means for American businesses in this industry. This is a great first step into a larger conversation - more on this later.
"Letter from a Dodge Dealer," The American Thinker May 24th, 2009. In this letter a dealer laments the current situation with Chrysler. Read up because this is the new American way under Obama!

"Is French Health System a Model for U.S.?" from the Dallas Morning News discusses some of the differences and pros and cons of the American and French health care systems. The article doesn't get into the details or economics of either approach, but it is a good starting point for a conversation this nation desperately needs.
"How Can We Escape This Mess," from this month's Kiplinger's is an interview with Robert Shiller. You may recognize him from the Case-Shiller Home Price Index. Shiller is a interesting and experienced economist, and while I don't really agree with everything he stands for, it is worth a read anyway.

"Inside GM, with the G-Men in Charge" Business Week May 11th Edition.
This article describes how the Obama administration has inserted itself into the daily workings of GM. When the government started its assistance program to GM the White House clearly stated that it had no desire to run a car maker. The truth of the matter is shocking, from strong arming bondholders to axing brands, the White House is involved in every decision. This is how Obama views capitalism and companies.
"Hints of Recovery - And Fears of Inflation" Business Week May 11th Edition.
This week's business outlook column looks to the near- and medium-term future of our economy. Is it possible we are nearing a bottom? What might happen next? All this and more is addressed.
"Help Wanted" Business Week May 11th Edition.
This article looks at the structural changes in the U.S. economy that are being ushered in by this recession. These changes are having profound impacts on both the rate of and length of unemployment. These trends will rule the job markets for many professions and alter long-term income potentials for hundreds of thousands of professionals. You simply must read this article!

Monday Must Read
Today is the first edition of a new weekly feature called Monday Must Read. This feature will include a few of the more interesting articles I find during the course of the week that you must read.
May 5, 2009:
"The Good News in a Shrinking GDP," Business Week May 4th Edition
This article gives a pretty good summation of where the economy stands going forward. It is interesting reading and I find the assumptions and foundations to be sound. In general I would recommend this weekly series called the "Business Outlook."
"The Dubious Promise of Digital Medicine," Business Week May 4th Edition

"The Dubious Promise of Digital Medicine," Business Week May 4th Edition
This article is one of the feature stories in this edition of Business Week. It gives a pretty thorough look at the industry surrounding digital medical records and systems. The author points out some of the dubious assumptions being made in predicted savings numbers. This is something everyone should read given our President's affinity for this industry. If we are expected to foot the bill for this digital make over we should be asking some tough and critical questions. Remember, when the dust settles the taxpayer will be left holding the bill!
